Personally, I think programming these days should be regarded as basic literacy.
It will fundamentally change the way you relate to your computer and you will learn to think better. Apart from many other benefits.
Don't do courses - just buy a book and sweat it out.
It's like trying to read a telephone directory at first, but it gets better with time - or not - in which case it is not for you - back to pushing around icons...
